What is Invisalign®?

Invisalign is a series of custom designed invisible (clear) plastic aligners, that fit over your teeth, similar to but much slimmer than a sports mouthguard. The patient wears each aligner for a short period of time which over time comfortably move their teeth into the proper location. These ‘invisible braces’ are custom-designed by a dentist for the patient based on a variety of delicate measurements and state of the art software. Sometimes anchors are temporarily glued onto the patients teeth to help the aligners make more advanced movements to the patient’s teeth. The patient’s teeth are gradually moved into the desired position to give them the perfect smile they’ve always dreamed of.

Benefits of Invisalign

Crooked teeth can lead to abnormal stress to teeth and jaws which can lead to premature wear. If teeth are bunched together, it will inhibit proper cleaning and thus lead to a buildup of bacteria.  Oral bacteria leads to periodontal disease, leads to bone loss and which will affect your overall health.  Difficulty cleaning teeth also will mean more intervention for cavities that will form and thus higher dental costs.

What Dental Problems Can be Treated by Invisalign?

Invisalign can correct several orthodontic problems. Specifically, invisible aligners may be a great solution if you have been told you have any of the following problems:

  • Teeth with a gap
  • Crowded teeth
  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Open bite
  • Crooked teeth
  • Cross-bite

The Process for Invisalign is Easy and Painless.

Dr. Perkins will take digital or traditional impressions, digital x-rays, and photographs and bite measurements from which Invisalign will create a 3-D model of your teeth and how you bite. Using Invisalign’s state of the art software, Dr. Perkins will graphically move your teeth into better locations and design your perfect smile.  Align’s software will then generate a series of aligners which gently and slowly move your teeth into new positions until they are where they need to be.  The You will be able to see from the Invisalign software how your teeth will move with each step.

Based on Dr. Perkins’ treatment plan, Invisalign will manufacture a set of custom-made aligners. Because these are custom, they will be comfortable, smooth and won’t hurt like traditional braces. Once you receive the aligners, you will change them out once every two weeks and have periodic checkups with Dr. Perkins to monitor your progress.

Even if you want to make further changes after treatment is finished, “refinement” aligners can be custom-created, at no additional cost, to get you to where you want to be.

Why Choose Invisalign over other clear aligners?

There are other types of teeth aligners available through dentists such as Clear Correct, Motto Clear Aligners, Smileie, Suresmile, Spark, Orthosnap.  Some of those options are even cheaper than Invisalign.  However, Invisalign has been the leader in innovation in invisible aligner market since the beginning.  In fact, Invisalign is the #1 doctor recommended invisible aligner option. 25 years and more than 18 million smiles later, Invisalign aligners continue to help change lives around the world.

There are also a lot of fly-by-night at home kits which may not even involve the supervision of a dentist.  We wouldn’t recommend these as you are moving the position of your teeth and bite and can cause significant harm, and thus should be under the supervision of a dentist.  Finally, Smile Direct Club, one other option declared bankruptcy, abandoning thousands of patients midway through their adjustment.

Does Dental Insurance cover Invisalign?

Each dental plan is different.  However, if your dental plan covers orthodontic treatment, it will cover invisible braces like Invisalign, even for adults, as long as you haven’t used that coverage up.  The best way to know is to talk to the insurance experts at our office and get a personalized estimate.

What Real Patients Are Saying About Invisalign

“The most amazing thing for me is really feeling like I’m doing this for myself. It’s a gift I’ve given myself. It has helped me be more mindful of my eating habits, and I’ve lost a little weight. It kicked off some much healthier oral hygiene, and as a result I’ve been more aware of other changes I should be making as well. It’s also made me less self-conscious because I have too much excitement about the future results to get hung up on any awkwardness now.

This is the first time in my life that I’ve allowed myself to invest this much into just me, and it’s a long time coming.” – Invisalign Patient
