Many patients will ask the question: Why am I being referred to a dental specialist? If you have a issue that requires advanced care, your dentist may refer you to a specialist who focuses on treating a particular condition. These specialists have advanced training (at least 2 or more years beyond dental school) in their particular field.

Endodontist
These specialists treat injuries and diseases of the pulp, or nerves of the teeth, usually by performing root canal therapy. These are the dentists that you’re happy to see if you’ve been up all night with a bad toothache.
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon
These surgeons are trained in a hospital based residency program for at least 4 years, focusing on the bone and tissue of the face, mouth and jaw.
They typically extract teeth, place implants, treat facial injuries and remove tumors and cysts.
Orthodontist
These specialists focus on straightening teeth with braces (metal and invisable) and aligning jaws.
If you’ve been referred to one of these specialists, don’t panic. It’s your general dentists way of saying “Your dental health and well-being are important to me, so I’m referring you to the best specialist possible to treat your condition.”
